Film Screening: The Opera House

Presented as part of the the Hamptons International Film Festival and Guild Hall NOW SHOWING series. The series, curated by HIFF, features first run, acclaimed art house, independent, and world cinema not otherwise slated for the East End to Guild Hall’s John Drew Theater on select Saturdays throughout the winter.

The Opera House is a new documentary—by multiple Emmy Award–winning filmmaker Susan Froemke—chronicling the creation of The Metropolitan Opera’s Lincoln Center home. The film features rarely seen archival footage, stills, recent interviews, and extraordinary opera performances.

Among the notable figures in the film are famed soprano Leontyne Price, who opened the new Met in 1966 in Samuel Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra; Rudolf Bing, the Met’s long-time general manager, who engineered the move from the old house to the new one; Robert Moses, the unstoppable and legendary city planner who bulldozed an entire neighborhood to make room for Lincoln Center; and architect Wallace Harrison, whose quest for glory was never fully realized.

Running time 108 minutes. General Admission: $18
